The GPS Rangers are a dedicated volunteer group focused on using GPS technology to enhance land management. Our mission is to provide accurate field data to support better mapping and trail management efforts with public land managers.
Hike trails and collect trail line and point data on GPS units. Take photos and notes to document GPS data and assess trail conditions. Surveys involve camping, backpacking, or hotel stays. Click below to see details of upcoming events.
Perform unique surveys or special projects using specialized equipment based on public land manager needs, for example pinpointing, measuring, and identifying landscape trees.
Provide field data to public land managers within state, local, and national parks and forests nationwide. Click below to see a list of parks that have been surveyed by the GPS Rangers.
Free training is provided! If you love the outdoors, we'd love to have you. Training is typically provided in spring and fall, and located in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Special arrangements can be made for large groups.
